Envidan selected as process consultant for Aarhus Water’s new resource and treatment plant

Aahus Vand has chosen Envidan as process consultant for the design of the new, future resource and treatment plant, Aarhus Rewater. It will replace the Marselisborg, Åby and Viby wastewater treatment plants in 2028.

In a few years, Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant will have insufficient capacity to treat the wastewater from a growing number of citizens in Aarhus Municipality. Moreover, there is no room to expand the facility, which is adjacent to Marselisborg Marina. Åby and Viby waste water treatment plants also have insufficient capacity. Therefore, a new, large-scale plant will be built in a new location in the area where the current Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant is located.

A flagship for circular economy

The plant – Aarhus Rewater – will be a highly innovative wastewater treatment plant that, in addition to treating wastewater, will produce surplus energy and utilize the resources in the wastewater to an extent not seen elsewhere and will be of great benefit to the environment, citizens and society. These are resources such as nutrients, proteins, food, chemicals and basic substances for the health industry. The project will be a flagship for circular economy in Aarhus Vand and will pave the way for the water company to be energy and CO2-neutral by 2030.

This great ambition will now be realized by the consultancy firm Envidan together with sub-consultants KWR Water Research Institute and Royal HaskoningDHV Nederland B.V. This pleases Morten Fjerbæk, CEO of Envidan, who says:

“We are of course extremely proud that we, together with our Dutch sub-consultants, have been appointed as Aarhus Water’s process advisor on this assignment. Our employees are driven by professionalism and personal development, and the fact that we will be a central part of the largest and most innovative treatment plant project in recent Danish history for the next many years gives Envidan a unique opportunity to offer our employees just that.”

The task as process advisor has been put out to tender in an innovation partnership, and the choice was made on the basis of a prior six-month innovation process with Aarhus Vand. Claus Møller Pedersen, Director of Business Development at Aarhus Vand, says about the assignment:

“As process consultant, Envidan will assist Aarhus Vand with the design of the overall process plant for Aarhus Rewater – from the initial selection of technologies and resources for utilization to the final design. It is very complex, but Envidan is among the foremost in the field of resource utilization at treatment plants, and together with the two sub-consultants, we now have a very strong team that I am confident can solve the task.”

A multi-stage tendering process

The selection of the process consultant is step two in the overall procurement process for Aarhus Rewater. The first step was architectural advice, which went to the architectural firm Henning Larsen. The third step will be the contracting part, after which Aarhus Vand will form the final team consisting of the architect consortium, the process consultant consortium and the contractor consortium at the end of 2021.

Construction of Aarhus Rewater is scheduled to run until mid-2028, when the plant is expected to be operational. The plant is then expected to be continuously expanded until 2060, when the capacity will reach the equivalent of 600,000 people’s wastewater discharge.
